ひんぷんがじまる　（Hinpun Gajumaru/Hinpun Banyan Tree）

 　名護市の商店街の入口に堂々と立つ巨木である。分岐した幹から、四方八方に繁茂する枝葉が形づくる樹冠や、幾条もの気根を垂らす姿に圧倒される。「ひんぷん」とは屋敷の正門と母屋の間に設けられた塀のことで、外からの目隠しや、悪霊を防ぐものと言われいる。　1705年、具志頭親方蔡温は、当時の運河開通論と王府の名護移遷論を鎮圧させるため、三府龍脈碑（さんぷりゅうみゃくひ）を建てた。この石碑がヒンプンのように見えることから「ヒンプンシー」と名付けられ、その隣に生育するこのガジュマルのいつしか「ひんぷんがじゅまる」と呼ばれるようになった。

 

At the entrance to Nago City’s shopping arcade stands a huge, regal tree. Its figure, with canopy shaped by foliage growing in all directions from bifurcated trunks and many hanging aerial roots, overwhelms people who see it. A “hinpun” is a fence set up in the space between the main house and front gate of a mansion, hidden from the outside, and said to ward off evil spirits.

In 1705, there were disputes over opening a canal, and moving the royal government to Nago. Politician Saion built a monument called the Sanpuryu Myakuhi to suppress such disputes. This stone monument looked like a hinpun and was thus named “hinpunshii.” A gajumaru tree (Ficus microcarpa, banyan tree) grew next to it, and thus the name “hinpun gajumaru” was born.
