渡名喜番所渡名喜小中学校跡のフクギ群　（Tonaki Bansho Tonaki Shouchuu Gakko Ato no Fukugi/Common Garcinia Tree Colony at the Site of Former Tonaki Station and Former Tonaki School）

　

 

渡名喜島は台風被害を避けるため、路面より低い屋敷やフクギの垣根、白砂の道路といった独特の集落風景が残っている。その集落内にあって、琉球王朝時代、農耕地と番所の境界線になるように植えたという由来を持つ当樹木は、樹高14mのものを筆頭に９本からなるフクギ群として地域住民や観光客を楽しませている。また、隣り合う木の葉が重なり合っているため、離れた場所からみると、まるで１本の大きな樹木が枝を広げているようである。
　フクギは渡名喜村の村木でもあり、古の渡名喜島の風景を知っている当樹木は、この島の歴史を刻んだ貴重な樹木である。

 

 

In order to prevent typhoon damages, characteristic village scenery still remains on Tonaki Island; houses made lower than the surface of the road, fukugi (a species of garcinia tree) hedges and roads of white sand. It has been said in the village that during the Ryukyu Dynasty the trees were originally planted as a border between cropland and the bansho (regional public station). The tallest one 14m at its head, this group of nine fukugi trees pleases community residents and visitors. The leaves of the nine neighboring trees overlap each other, so it looks like one huge tree with wide-spanning branches from a distance.

This fukugi, the Tonaki Village tree, has seen scenes of ancient Tonaki, making it historically precious.
