土原拝所のあかぎ ( Ntaharu Ugan no Akagi/Bishop Wood at Ntaharu Ugan)

For 300 years, this tree has watched over traditional culture and performing arts at the ceremonial site where “Hachigatsu Odori/August Dance” is held on Tarama Island. Tarama Island’s August Dance is held in August of the old lunar calendar and its origin is not known. However, August Dance is considered to have a fairly long history, as it was referred to as “August Prayer” or “Celebration for the Completion of the Year’s Tax Payments.” In the 1600s, the people suffered under the tax payment system in Miyako and Yaemaya. After they finished their tax payments in July of the old calendar, they reported the completion of those payments and prayed for the next year’s rich harvest at an annual event called “August Prayer.” In this event it is said they celebrated payment completion, comforted each other’s suffering due to payments and performed a dedicatory dance before God.
